Sylacauga Parks & Recreation

About

Sylacauga Parks and Recreation is a full-time recreation department for the City of Sylacauga.

We now have three recreation centers.

  1. The main center is the J. Craig Smith Community Center, named for a past board member, and was built in 1976.
  2. The Verlie B. Collins center is a recreational facility that houses a gymnasium and meeting rooms.
  3. The Maxye Veazey Senior Adult Activity Center is our newest facility and was built in 2007.

In 2007, the Parks and Recreation department updated all five city parks and all are now handicapped accessible.

  • Noble Park is our largest park with age appropriate play structures, a pavilion for rental, a skate park, and BMX track. The park also features a 1/4 mile concrete walking track.
  • Beth Wallace Yates Park is the location of the tennis center as well as a pavilion for rental, age appropriate play structures, and a sand pit for volleyball.
  • We have two smaller community parks, Fairmont Park and South Highland Park, that both feature basketball courts, play equipment, and a small pavilion.
  • The newest edition, Central Park, is a passive recreation area includes a large pavilion and restrooms.
  • In the fall of 2008, there will be a 15 mile mountain biking and hiking trail at Lake Howard. This trail will go through portions of the Talladega National Forest. There are also plans for a new pavilion, primitive camping and camper hookups, at a later date.

The Donald Comer Complex is used for a variety of activities. Cal Ripken baseball in the spring and soccer and football in the fall, just to name a few.

The pool is open to the public in the summer. We offer swimming lessons, swim team, water aerobics, and pool parties. Please contact us at the J. Craig Smith Community Center for your reservation.

Our community is very pro recreation and we would love for everyone to come and enjoy the many opportunities that our city has to offer.
